It is a religious celebration where prayers for prosperity are offered.

Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708 C.E.) was the tenth Guru out of total 10 Sikh Gurus. He was born in Patna, Bihar on Saptami, Paush, Shukla Paksha, 1723 Vikram Samvat (Hindu calendar) which roughly corresponds to December 22, 1666.

Legend:

Gobind Singh was the only son of the ninth Sikh guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Mata Gujri. He was born in Patna, Bihar. He was named Gobind Rai at his birth. A shrine called Takht Sri Patna Harimandar Sahib marks the site of the house where Guru Gobind Singh was born and spent the first four years of his life. His family returned to Punjab in 1670, and two years later they moved to Chakk Nanaki in the Himalayan foothills of north India where he had completed his school education.

Gobind Singh's father Tegh Bahadur founded the city of Chakk Nanaki, also known as Anandpur Sahib, in 1665.

In 1675, Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded on the orders of Aurangzeb for refusing to convert to Islam. After his martyrdom, the young Gobind Singh was named by the Sikhs as the tenth Sikh Guru on Vaisakhi day, (March 29, 1676).

Guru Gobind Singh was also trained in martial arts such as horse riding and archery. In 1684, he wrote Chandi di Var a book in the Punjabi language which describes a war between the good and the evil, as described in the ancient Sanskrit text Markandeya Purana. He spent his life in Paonta, near the banks of river Yamuna, till 1685. Guru Gobind Singh had three wives. At the age of 10, he married Mata Jito. They had three sons: Jujhar Singh, Zorawar Singh, and Fateh Singh. At the age of 17, he married Mata Sundari. The couple had one son, Ajit Singh. At the age of 33, he married Mata Sahib Devan who played an influential role for Sikhism. Guru Gobind Singh named her as the Mother of the Khalsa.

Significance of Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti:

The life example and leadership of Guru Gobind Singh has an immense influence on the Sikhs. He institutionalized the Khalsa which played the key role in protecting the Sikhs long after his death during the nine invasions of Panjab and holy war led by Ahmad Shah Abdali (1747 and 1769).

Guru Gobind Singh's teachings have a great impact on Sikhs. He stood against the Mughal Rulers and fought against injustice. In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh baptized five men from the lower caste as his Five Beloveds, endowing them with courage and devotion to God. His dedication to God, his fearlessness and his desire to protect the people from being oppressed made Guru Gobind Singh to establish the Khalsa, a military force of saint-soldiers. In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji initiated the Five K’s tradition of the Khalsa, Kesh – uncut hair; Kangha – a wooden comb; Kara – an iron or steel bracelet worn on the wrist; Kripan – a sword or dagger; and Kacchera – short breeches.

Under Guru Gobind Singh's guidance and inspiration, the Khalsa followed a strict moral code and discipline. Through his courage, the people rose against the oppression of the Mughal ruler in India. Aside from being a spiritual and a military leader Guru Gobind Singh was also a writer. Before his death in 1708, he declared Sikhism's Holy Scripture, Guru Granth Sahib to be the permanent Sikh Guru.

26th December 1705 is the day Zoravar Singh, aged 9 and Fateh Singh, aged 6, the two sahibzade (sons) of Guru Govind Singh attained Veer Gati, bricked alive by Aurangzeb’s fauzdar of Sirhind.

His example inspires people to this day and his writings and poetry still encourage people around the world. On this day, Sikhs around the world go to Gurudwaras where prayer meetings are organized in honor of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Many families participate in processions organized by the Gurudwaras, hold kirtans and do Seva, which is a significant part of the Sikh religion. Food is also distributed among the needy and poor on this day.

The Silverpot, seen in the pictures here, was given by the Komarpanth elders of the Kshatriya Komarpanth Samaj in the year 1847 to Gokarna Mahabaleshwara temple.

This silver pot is dedicated to Rudra Abhisheka and Rudra Japa of Lord Mahabaleshwara on a daily basis.

This goes to show that we Kshatriya Komarpanth were priority devotees of Gokarna Mahabaleshwara since time immemorial and the Rathotsava was also conducted since ages.

Only in the year 1935 a Agreement was drawn by the Komarpanth elders with the then Gokarna Temple management committee, and an amount was kept as deposit for this Rathotsava seva.

We bow our heads in respect to our Komarpant ancestors and elders for this honour and also to Sri Sri Samsthan for supporting us and reinitiating this tradition of the Samaj at Gokarna.
Har Har Mahadev !

In the month of May, in Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar and Bhatkal taluks in Uttara Kannada it is the season for "Bandi Habba," a folk festival.

Basically, it is a festival for farmers to evoke the blessings of village deities before sowing. It is also celebrated in honour of those killed in wars and "#mahasatis" who sacrificed their lives to uphold the village tradition. It is called "Bandi Habba" because in ancient days the deities were placed on a bandi (a cart with four wheels) and taken in a procession.

The presiding deity of the festival is the gram devata, Amma, also known as Shanta Durga, Bhoomitai and Kanchika Parameshwari. The festival is celebrated for eight to 12 days.

During the festival, a small water pot (`#kalasha') is kept on a stone platform in the temple. The `kalasha' is decorated with flowers and ornaments and the mask of the deity is placed at the centre of the platform. Every day during the festival, gunaga, the head priest, carries the `kalasha' on his head and goes in a procession. At night, the `kalasha' is placed on a platform called Adukatte and worshiped. Later, the `kalasha' is taken to "uyyale chappara," a swing. The gunaga conducts the traditional rituals there.

The festival brings people of different communities together. The festival can be a tourist attraction and provide opportunities to study the folk art, culture and tradition of the region.

Dear All,

You will all agree that the Kshatriya Komarpanth Samaj had a grand history of administering and ruling the territory to the extent from Gomantaka(Goa) to Honnavara, and from Sonda to Sringeri, which our ancestors have done since the time of our Guru Komaar, which is estimated to be more than 700 years.

In this region, each and every temple and Matha was connected to our Samaj in one way or the other, and our Samaj was given the privilege and honour in many of these temples and Mathas.

We already know about our connection with Sringeri Peetha, and the revered Jagadguru of Sringeri.

Some had a very rough idea, but many of our Kshatriya Komarpanth Samaj were unaware of the exact connection of our Samaj with the Gokarna Mahabaleshwara Temple.

In regards to Gokarna, we feel happy to announce that we have been able to collect an important piece of information in the form of a document, which is a Bond registered and executed on 17th November 1935, in which it was decided by the then President and other prominent elder members of the Akhila Kshatriya Komarpanth Samaj, Karwar, with the Administrators of Gokarna Mahabaleshwara Temple, to have an annual Rathotsava Seva and Mahapooja, on the day of Chaitra Bahulla Amavasyaa, for the general well being of the Kshatriya Komarpanth Samaj members. This aspect was forgotten since many years, and was not in practice.

We have brought this document/Bond to the kind attention of the present administrator of Gokarna Temple, being Sri Ramachandrapura Matha Peethadhipati Sri Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati Maha Swami, who has duly considered this Sankalpa made by the then elders of the Kshatriya Komarpanth Samaj, and has gladly and graciously accepted the same, ordering the priests at Gokarna Mahabaleshwara Temple to conduct the Rathotsava on the day of Chaitra Bahulla Amavasyaa, which falls on this 26th day of April 2017 (Wednesday).

We are all requested and expected by Swamiji to participate in this important event of Rathotsava and the evening MahaPooja at Gokarna, which is a privilege and honour granted to us by our elders, and the Administrators of Sri Gokarna Kshetra, and take part in the Anugraha, Aashirwada and Prasada of Sri Gokarna Mahabaleshwara.

Therefore, this is to request you as the President of the Kshatriya Komarpanth Samaj of your region, to attend this event, on this 26th April 2017 (Wednesday) at 4-00PM at Kekkaru Matha, near Kotiteertha of Sri Kshetra Gokarna, alongwith all other members of the Kshatriya Komarpanth Samaj.

Please Oblige.

Warm Regards,

Yours Sincerely,

POINGUINNIM: A book on tiatr titled ‘Teag’, written by Mr Ramesh B Komarpant was recently released at the hands of Damodar Mauzo, who was the chief guest on the occasion. The function was presided over by Goa Konkani Academy vice-president, Mr Vincy Quadros. Others present on the occasion were vice-president of Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, Mr Shridhar Kamat, Mr kamlakar Mhalshi and a host of other dignitaries.

Mauzo, speaking on the occasion, said that Konkani in the Devanagri and Romi script go hand in hand, but there were sections of people with vested interests who were trying to create rifts among the people over the issue. He said the time has come to fight any attempt at divisions and instead work with unity adding that working towards the promotion of both the scripts was the need of the hour. Mauzo maintained that the two forms of Konkani theatre namely ‘tiatr’ and ‘natak’ have a distinct identity and hence comparison of any sort was unfair.

Mr Shridhar Kamat in his speech stated that tiatr had its own strengths and any comparison with any other forms of drama would be inappropriate and that Konkani tiatr has contributed immensely towards the development of the Konkani language. He hoped that with the number of people choosing to write in Konkani increasing, Konkani would receive the much needed boost. Though Canacona doesn’t have a Ravindra Bhavan, musical activities and other forms of dramas continued to thrive here he said suggesting that the facilities and schemes offered by the Ravindra Bhavan at Margao should also be extended to the people of Canacona so that Canconkars too could get a platform to showcase their talent.

Mr Vincy Quadros took the opportunity to advise budding writers to forward one copy of their book to the executive committee. He further listed out a few schemes that writers could avail of.

Mr Sudesh Naik explained the preface of the book while Mr Vassalo Carvalho spoke on Konkani tiatr, its composition, setting and inception. Earlier, Mr Kamlakar Mhalshi welcomed the gathering, while Mr Anant Agni compered the function. Mr R B S Komarpant proposed the vote of thanks.
