HISTORY OF KOMARPANTHS

The Kshatriya Komarpanths are originally from the Keladi Kingdom or the Vijayanagar Empire and are the FOLLOWERS OF “SHRI SHRINGERI MATA” FOUNDED BY HIS HOLINESS “JAGADGURU SHRI SHANKARACHARYA”

Komarpanths are Kshatriyas, basically from Goa State and down to south they have their own dialet in Kannada language as their mother tongue. If we go in-depth history we understand that we are originally from the Kings family of Karnataka or the old Mysore State.

The Rulers of Keladi had extended their kingdom upto Goa State and it is also a fact that the Keladi Kingdom was under the control of the Vijayanagara Kingdom.

Kshatriya Komarpanths are also referred to as those fromPayaka” family which means that they are from the Superior leader” or the Troop Leaders. They are Brave, well known for Horse riding, Archery and Freedom Fighters. They have fought several times with the Sultans of Mysore and Britishers.

Komarpanth Veera Henje Naik born in the year 1736 was not only brave soldier but a Patriotic Freedom fighter, who fought against the Britishers and the Sulthans of Mysore. The Britishers later killed him in the year 1801. The “Samadhi” of the brave warrior still remains in the Kodibag Village on the Karwar – Kodibag Main Road on the Western Side next to the Government Boys Model School.

The Portuguese and the Dutch also ruled Goa and later the Britishers came to India in the guise of Trade. Marathas also came to power during the Moghul Rule in India. In south Hyder Ali and Tippu Sulthan were thre prominent Rulers whereas in the North were the Moghul Rulers.

During the period from 1736 – 1801 the of the Kshatriya Komarpanth Community, “Chak Mak Jenga Veera Henje Naik” ruled the province of Goa and some parts of Karwar and Uttara Kannada District and determined to fight against the Britishers and the Sulthans of Mysore. Komarpanths were ruling from Uttara Kannada District upto Goa. Veera Henja Naik was a prominent Leader of the Keladi Kingdom of those days. Also because of the bravery of the Great Sadashiva Nayaka’s administartion in the Keladi Kingdom, it was extended upto Goa State. Kshatriya Komarpanths have settled in each and every villages spread across Goa State , and in Uttara Kannada district Karwar Ankola, Joida, Yellapur, Haliyal and even upto Kumta Taluk।

It is very sad to note that the attempt of this brave warrior did not continue for too long because of the cunning attitude of the britishers. He gathered people from his community and tried to topple the Britishers and also Sulthans. One day when Veera Henja Naika and his associates were swimming across the Kali river the Britishers attacked him and shot at him. The Samadhi built in his name still remains on the Karwar – Kodibag Main Road in Kodibag limits.

He was also conferred upon with the title “CHAK MAK JENGA”, KOMARPANTH VEERA, HENJE NAIK . The monuments installed by the Komarpanths still remain in the islands of Anjan Deep Islands, Kurmgod Islands, Guddehalli Islands and Belur Shirave hills.

Sir,
The dates of Henja Naik and Sadashiva Nayak does not match .

Sadashiva Naik period 1530 - 1566 .
Henja Naik Period 1736-1801.

Battles Fought.
Battle of Talekote , Battle of Kalyani himself.

Henja Naik.
Against Tippu and Hyder Ali at around Hyder Pass which can be seen on back of Harwada .

Against British on Kali River while crossing the Kali river to Sadashiva Gad.

Henja seems to be a ruler of small province which was independently controlled by him .

His Sir Name is Naik meaning a military position above Hawaldar of Platoons, i.e, a Battalion leader.

Just as Hyder Ali was also a Naik at Nizam some time.

Henja would have become de-facto King .

Also he was called Chakama-zjang while fighting against tippu sultan . For Jumping from Elephant with a sword and attacking to save his raw requite solders.

His solders were long swords men , short pike men and some Musketeers.

The fact he was riding elephant because, his elephant bell was put in lord Ganesha temple , when henja's elephant got sick with fewer he prayed to lord ganesha that if his elephant recovers he would give the elephants bell to temple. So he gave to temple. One important fact is it was carved on stones about that record some were around temple.

Please correct me if I am wrong. I Just wanted to give some information.

Were Portuguese supporting Komarpanths ? Because Marathas and Nizams supported British against Tippu. French supported Tippu.
May be my guess because the Raja of Sonda and Portuguese fought against each other.

Keladi Nayakas also had good relationships with Portuguese.

And why did British , Arabs and Marathas fought for Bait-e-kol port?.
Also Portuguese also had a keen interest in Bait-e-kol Port.why?

Portuguese did not fight against any Kannada ruler .Konkan strip existed till from Thane to Bhatkal.

Respected All ,

Kindly correct one point I wrote earlier.

Sadashiva Naik period 1530 - 1566 .

Battles Fought.
Battle of Talekote with Alya Rama of Vijaynagar and Battle of Kalyani himself.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Few more important British written facts.

Queen Virammaji of keladi kingdom 1763 was defeated by Hyder Ali.

Tipu Sultan Died 4 May 1799 .
Sonda kings - Portuguese eventually took over the area in 1791.

Henja Naik - The Britishers later killed him in the year 1801.

As per the British gadget.

This means Karwar never came under Tippu/Hyder power.

The Sir Henja Naik was a independent Chieftain .

Kindly correct if any thing is wrong.

well, it's a lot I read about komarpant and their history, but question arise in my mind is obvious that, should I be a proud of my language which is kannada? unfortunately whenever I try to explain komarpantians here in Pune by giving references on internet I am opposed from my family itself ! because we live in Pune from last 50 years and I am now 44, though we are regular visitor to Karwar and of course proud of it, but in today's globalized world whenever I wanted to explain about komarpant's origin I am ignored and it is very shameful that komarpantians are on the top to suppress my voice saying konkani is our language.

Hi Deepak Naik,
It is very surprising and disgusting that Komarpants themselves are looking down upon their Kannada identity! Kannada is an amazing language having a history of more than 2500 years (Greek dramatists Aristophanes and Euripides have used Kannada word in their dramas!) which Konkani, Marathi or Hindi can't boast of! Also, empires like Chutus, Kadambas, Gangas, Kalabhras, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas (Ajanta, Ellora, Elephanta islands near Mumbai), Kalyani Chalukyas, Kalachurya, early Sevuna Yadavas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara, Wodeyars were all built by Kannadigas in protecting India against foreign invaders. Kannada rulers also ruled Odisha, Kalinga, Nepal, Bihar, Kannauj, etc., Senas of Bengal, Solankis of Gujarat were Kannadigas too. Please preserve Kannada among all your generations! Also, it was the Kannada emperors who gave refuge to Konkanis at times of crises - like Bijapur Adil Shahi capture of Goas, Portuguese inquisition, etc., in Kannada lands. It is said that during this period, half of Goans settled in Karwar and many never returned back. Because of this Konkanis became a majority in Karwar.
